144 West Marine View Drive
Everett, WA  98201

Apprentice meeting held from 5:45 PM to 6:20 PM.  Gregg Bartley and Nathan Murphy led the session.

Meeting called to order at 6:35 PM by Kevin Stride and Mark Myers. Welcome back to all officials for an exciting year. All meetings this year will be "joint" (combined meetings with SCBOA and SCBOWBO) to have one voice to everyone and have one line of communication. We will talk basketball all year long and have guest speakers.

Kevin and Mark asked each official to stand up and introduce themselves with their name and number of years of service to SCBOA and SCBOWBO. Kevin asked the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year officials to stand and be recognized because they are the future of our organizations.

Kevin and Mark outlined the plan for the boards this year. They explained that this year's meetings are front-loaded (4 of the 7 meetings will be done before the games being) so that we can meet less often during the busy season.

Mark introduced the guest speaker, Matt Mason. Matt suggested that everyone set goals for this season. Set high goals, but also be realistic about what the highest level you can reach is. Reaching that level is up to you, it is not up to others to tell you how to get there. Have a game day routine and stick to it. Get to the gym to exercise - the first impression of coaches/fans/partners is if you are in shape and looking like an athlete. Know the rules - read them again before the year. Read the case book. In the off-season, attend camps. Attend camps out of your local area so you can get honest feedback. Participate in summer and fall leagues and use them to work on your game and add the things you learned at camp to your officiating game. Fine a mentor and use them to improve and understand the game better. Talk basketball. Have a plan for the year. Learn from listening to the younger officials because all of the weird stuff happens in junior high basketball games. Subscribe to Referee Magazine. Get a couple of your in-season games taped and watch the tape with a critical eye - are you getting open looks at plays? Watch your tapes with someone who understands how to break down game tapes. Arrive early to watch the game before yours (or stay later and watch the game after yours). JV teams and Varsity teams usually run the same offense so you can know what to expect by watching the other levels. Look professional when you arrive to the gym (jeans are not a professional look). Keep your priorities straight (family and friends always more important than basketball). At the end of his presentation, Matt took several questions from officials. Matt also talked about the "high Center" and "low Center" positions that were taught at camps in the summer.

Dan Taylor and Lee Ottini spent some time talking about assigning and Arbiter: Availability calendars in Arbiter are due to be completed by November 17 for the first assigning period. Officials need to remember that boys and girls Arbiter calendars are separate. If you are available to work on one side, you need to block out the other side. For any official wanting to work a Varsity game in the first assigning period, the online test and clinic need to be completed by November 17. Officials should "pace themselves" and not open availability for every night or they will become overworked and burned out. Middle School games start in mid-November. The first week of the HS season is the first week of December.

Kevin Stride announced that Arbiter training will be held at Mountlake Terrace High School on November 16. New officials or any officials needing a refresher should plan to attend.

Kevin Erickson announced that the WOA has "clarified" the deadline date for officials to complete the WOA online clinic and to pass the WOA online test. January 12 is the "drop dead" date, but that is only for new or transfer officials who show up late in the season. That is the last date that they can be counted as certified officials for the 2008-09 season. Officials will NOT be assigned a varsity game until they have completed the online clinic and passed the online test. Since our assignors will be scheduling the first assigning period on Nov 17, the deadline date to finish the test and clinic is Nov 16.

Kevin Stride and Mark Myers asked officials to get involved in the association by joining committees or helping with other SCBOA and SCBOWBO functions. The boards have done a lot of work in the off-season and would appreciate any help from general membership. Mark reminded officials to take advantage of the SCBOA Yellow Pages where officials can list their businesses. Mark reminded officials that Legion Golf Course is providing us the concession area to use for our meetings for free. Please feel free to buy beverages and snacks to show our appreciation. Kevin reminded officials to bring extra ref clothes to "recycle" at the next meeting for the apprentice officials.

General meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.
