Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

November 10, 2008

Meeting Minutes: Monday, November 10, 2008:
Legion Memorial Golf Course Clubhouse
144 West Marine View Drive
Everett, WA  98201

5:40   Course cafeteria open for snacks and beverages.

5:45 PM to 6:20 PM:   Gregg Bartley, Nathan Murphy and Kevin Stride, along with several veterans led the apprentice meeting.

6:35 PM  -  Mark Myers called the meeting to order

6:40 PM - 6:45  -  Pat Kaminske reminded officials that their current address must be in Arbiter in order for checks to be sent to officials. HS checks come after the end of the season. Rec ball bills at the end of each month and then it takes 2-3 weeks after that before the checks get sent out.

6:45 - 6:50 PM  -  Mark mentioned that scrimmages and jamborees are starting soon. It is a chance for the coaches and players to get to know us a little bit. When you arrive to a scrimmage, find out from the coaches what the format will be. As the coaches if they need us to address players and or parents. Build some rapport and have fun. Let the coaches stop the scrimmage whenever they want to so they can instruct and correct.

6:50 - 7:00 PM - Lee Ottini and Dan Taylor informed officials that jamborees and scrimmages require full dress official's uniform. Dan's first scrimmage is at MLTHS on Nov 25 at 5:30 PM. There are also two jamborees on Dec 1. State passes are still available for purchase by officials for $10.00 Lee reminded officials that the time that they block up to in Arbiter makes them unavailable at that time. In other words, if you block from 8 AM until 3:45 PM, you will not be available for a 3:45 PM game. Don't block past 3:15 if you want to be available at 3:45. Cascade League Junior High games start at 3:00 PM. Lee mentioned that 49 out of 98 officials in Arbiter are ready to be assigned. That means that the other 49 officials have not filled out their availability and then checked the "ready" button in Arbiter. Only 26 officials out of 98 are certified by the WOA. That means that only 26 officials have completed the online test and clinic. Duane Taylor mentioned that only 31 SCBOWBO officials are certified. If you can't logged in to the WOA website, call Lee or Dan to have them get it fixed. November 17 is the drop-dead date for having Arbiter complete in order to be assigned for the first assigning period. Lee reminded veterans to NOT sign-up for a junior high game if Arbiter already shows another veteran signed up for that game. We need to let apprentice officials work the jr. high games matched up with veterans.

7:00 PM - 7:40   -  Guest Speaker Billy Rodgers, former head men's coach at North Seattle Community College and current boys coach at Ballard High School. He has observed officials at state tournaments and also at the college level. Coach Rodgers said that the number one thing that coaches need from officials is communication. He also said that players like officials who talk to them. A partnership between officials and coaches is critical because the game is for the players. A coach wants to know that the officials are in charge so that nothing "crazy" is going to occur in the game. Officials need to know the flow of the game and how the game is being played. Is it ragged and rough or being well played? Only then can officials know if a particular call is a good for the game. Coaches want consistency.. coaches and players can adjust. Hustle is always appreciated and Billy loves to see officials who sweat because of how hard they work. Officials can really have a positive effect on kids by being good role mentors. Conversations between officials and coaches need to be short and then it's time to move on. Don't stop learning... you can always improve.

7:45 - 8:15 PM   -  Paul Patterson showed 4 plays from his college game and talked about the calls made. Then Paul talked about the 10 progressive steps to becoming a better official. 1) Act like you are in charge - because you are. 2) Mechanics and Signals 3) Positioning and coverage areas 4) Call Selection 5) Game Flow/Game Management 6) Become a great partner 7) Player/Coach Awareness 8) Rules 9) Partner Involvement/Awareness 10) Leadership

Paul also discussed the observer program for SCBOA which will occur during JV and Varsity games. Gregg Bartley will be observing junior high games to help apprentice officials.
8:10 PM - 8:15 PM Golf Tournament/Banquet (Mark and Shayne)

8:15 - 8:25 PM   -   Mark Myers passed out two articles from Referee Magazine (Chalk Talk) for officials to take home.

Meeting adjourned by Mark Myers at 8:25 PM.
