Meeting Minutes: Monday, November 3, 2008:
Legion Memorial Golf Course
Clubhouse
144 West Marine View Drive
Everett, WA 982015:40 Course cafeteria open for snacks and
beverages. The apprentice meeting was held from 5:45 PM to 6:20
PM. Nathan Murphy, Kevin Stride and Todd Weber led the session.
6:20 PM - Kevin Stride reminded officials that the concessions
were open for food and beverages.
6:33 PM - Kevin Stride called the general meeting to order.
6:34 PM - Lee Ottini reminded officials that all boys Jr. High games
are self-assign. The games have all been taken, but Lee will unassign some
games from "veteran officials" to make sure that
our new officials are given enough junior high games. Lee reminded
officials to click on the "ready" button in Arbiter once their availability
calendars are filled out. Lee also reminded officials to NOT leave dates
open for both the girls and the boys associations. If you open a date up
to the girls association, block it for the boys association and vice versa!
Dan also reminded officials to get their availability calendars updated ASAP.
State passes are available for purchase to all officials for $10.00
This will get officials in to any state tournament game for any sport for the
rest of the 2008-09 athletic seasons. Dan reminded officials
to attend the Arbiter training session on Sun, Nov 16 if they need any help on
Arbiter.
6:37 PM - Kevin Stride reminded officials to see Kevin Erickson after the meeting if
they do not have a current picture to be posted on the websites and in Arbiter (or
if they do not like their current picture). He also reminded
officials that there will be one more floor training session on Sunday, Nov 9 at
MLT HS from 9 AM to 10:30 AM. Veterans are encouraged to attend to help
out.
6:40 PM - Guest Speaker Jason Schaefer addressed the group and mentioned
several of the things that have helped his officiating career (Jason has had a
meteoric rise to D-1 in only 6 years of officiating). Jason said to
"be careful what you wish for" because you might find yourself assigned to a big
game before you are ready. Work hard, but have some patience. Work
as many games as possible when you first start officiating. Be humble.
Listen to others that you respect. Emulate things that you see that are
successful and avoid the mistakes you observe. Work each game like it is
the biggest game of the day. If things happen that aren't great, learn and
move on. We all struggle at times. If you get some input that you
don't necessarily agree with, ask a valued mentor what they think of the
information. Find a mentor...perhaps more than one. Talk about
unusual game situations and other basketball items with your mentor. Don't
forget to talk other things with your fellow officials. Get to know them
personally. Enjoy the camaraderie of the group. From
each official you respect, you should be able to add a few things to your
toolbox from talking to them and from watching them work games. Set
goals every year. Attend camps in the off-season. Watch game tapes
and then watch them with a mentor. Have a postgame conference.
Attend the Friday night get-togethers with your fellow officials.
Work on your mechanics - they are of utmost importance at the high school level.
Be good when reporting to the table as well as at the spot of the foul.
You can earn 7 points at the spot of the foul - don't leave those final three
points unused. Earn those last 3 points at the table and make it a 10
point call. Study your rules. One thing a younger official can
do is know the rules and can help out a veteran in a game with that rules
knowledge. Enjoy the ride and stay humble. Use self talk in games
(silent, or even talking out loud).
7:20 PM - Short break to order food and beverages from concessions.
7:30 PM - Mark Myers passed out a handout on the new free throw positioning mechanic and discussed it briefly.
7:35 PM - Trent Harwood went over a few, selected test questions.
Kevin Stride reminded officials that they must be a certified official to work
varsity games (certified means that you paid your dues, attended enough
meetings, passed the test and took the online clinic).
7:40 PM - Leslie Tidball talked about the SCBOWBO scholarship program.
Through donations from officials, two athletes will be given $500.00
scholarships. Donation slips were passed out. Officials can
have their donation deducted from their paycheck at the end of the season.
7:45 PM - Paul Patterson and Wayne Sneva talked about "Think Pink" week
which is a cancer fundraiser. They recruited 3 committee members for their
committee. More info on this as the season progresses.
7:48 PM Quick announcements:
Kevin Stride asked for officials to consider working on the banquet committee.
The banquet is a lot of fun but takes work and planning. Please see the
board if you are willing to help. Kevin also mentioned that SCBOWBO
constitution updates are being worked on and will be e-mailed to officials soon.
They will be voted on later in the season. Mark Myers reminded
officials to check e-mail often as much association "business-type-stuff" will
be e-mailed rather than addressed in meetings. Mark reminded
officials to go through the board if they want something e-mailed to the entire
group. Officials should not send out mass e-mails to the entire
group on their own. Scott Depuy thanked the members of our
associations for their support when he lost his son earlier this year. He
emphasized how much of a "family" the ref associations are. Scott and his
wife have formed a foundation which goes to schools and helps to fight drug
abuse. If you know of a school that is in need of such a program, please
contact Scott.
Kevin Stride adjourned the meeting at 7:52 PM. |
