General Meeting Held at 7 PM on Monday, November 1, 2004
at the Everett Elks Club (Apprentice Meeting at 6 PM)
-
SCBOWBO president, Ashley Thomas, gave opening remarks and introduced the
board members, assignor, financial advisor and website maintainer. Ashley
also encouraged all members with any suggestions, complaints or concerns to
directly contact a board member. Ashley thanked outgoing board members,
Kevin Erickson and Gunther Hausmann. He also announced that attendance roll
call this season will be taken orally by our assignor, Dan Taylor.
-
Larry Kiger introduced the first year apprentice referees. Floor training
for apprentice officials will take place on November 3 and November 10 at
Valley View Middle School at 6:45 PM. Any veteran officials who could show
up to help the training would be greatly appreciated.
-
Kevin Erickson spoke briefly about the website and encouraged all officials to
browse the site and give feedback and suggestions. He encouraged referees to
post situations on the discussion board. All forms are on the website including
the background check form.
-
State Tests were given out to all officials in attendance. The test will not
be done as a group in a general meeting this year, however officials are allowed
to get together in their own groups and do the test together. Tests are due
back to any board member by December 15.
-
Jim Shaw is selling referee equipment and he had shirts, pants, whistles etc.
at our first meeting.
-
Dan Taylor gave out rule books to all returning officials as well as new officials
who have paid dues. Dan requested that all officials call his new "land line"
rather than his cell phone unless it is a game day emergency. Dan's new phone
number is 425-339-2120. Recreation basketball games will start in December. If
you want to work any of those games, please call Dan by Wednesday for a weekend
game.
-
Jason Bradley gave an overview of the two scholarship programs that SCBOWBO
administers.
1) Each summer, SCBOWBO provides scholarships to officials to attend summer
referee camps. The deadline to turn in a camp scholarship application is March 1.
The application forms are on the SCBOWBO website.
2) Each year, SCBOWBO provides two $500.00 scholarships to student athletes at the
schools we serve. The scholarships are made possible by donations (to be taken
out of paychecks at the end of the HS season) from officials. Donation slips will
be given out at a later meeting.
-
Dan Taylor discussed the recreation ball leagues that SCBOWBO assigns for. The
three leagues are Marysville Parks and Recreation, CYO and the Puget Sound
Traveling League. Any official who wants to work rec ball should call Dan by
Wednesday for a Saturday or Sunday assignment. Dan's new home phone number is
425-339-2120. Do not call his cell phone number except for game day emergencies!
Rec ball games are paid monthly.
-
Ashley Thomas led a discussion on 3-person officiating and got input from several
general members. The board of directors will take that info and make a decision
on how 3-person officiating will be implemented in SCBOWBO this season. Details
to follow in future meeting notes. Some of the points made during the discussion
were as follows:
*** Most Districts now have accepted the idea of doing 3-person games during
the regular season.
*** Doing 3-person during the regular season will help our officials who will be
doing district playoff and state tournament games this year. It will also
help ALL officials because 3-person is coming and will be implemented at all
levels at some point.
*** No officials are happy about the three-year pay cut (by the state) for
3-person games, but it is a waste of time and energy to fight that battle
because the decision has already been made.
*** Three-person officiating is the future of the game and the future is here.
*** Our association has always had a very good reputation for quality officials
and we need to keep that reputation up by embracing 3-person officiating and
getting up to speed on it as soon as possible.
-
Ashley reminded members that the MANDATORY interpreter's meeting takes place next
Monday, November 8, at Cascade High School in Everett at 7:00 PM.
-
Pat Kaminske gathered information for this year's service awards. Many thanks
to the years of service from these officials who have hit a new "5-year service
level":
5 Years: Scott Morris
10 Years: Duane Taylor
20 Years: Jim Shaw
30 Years: Glenn Dunbar
40 Years: Gunther Hausmann
-
Dan Taylor took verbal roll call.
-
Troy Moe administered the attendance raffle and Ron Bradley won a new referee shirt.
