Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

May 28, 2003

Meeting minutes for Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 6:30 PM:
Alfy's Pizza in Snohomish

  • We are trying to form a "ratings committee" to make suggestions to "tweak" our ratings system. Duane Taylor may possibly head the committee and we will continue to encourage him to do so. Last season was the first season using the new ratings system and we would like the committee to recommend some changes and/or additions to make it better. The committee would come up with recommendations to be voted on by our general members in the fall.
  • The board gave approval to the written evaluations and expectations of our school and recreation assignors. Kevin will meet with Dan Taylor and Rick Byrum and have them sign their evaluations and expectations for next season.
  • There has never been any formal guidelines for the assigning of district playoff games. Pat Kaminske suggested that the board implement some formal guidelines. Pat did not attend the meeting, however the board did come up with a process for our assignor. The first 15 spots will be given to officials ranked 1-15. The second 15 spots will be given to officials ranked 1-15. The third 15 spots will be given to officials ranked 1-15. If there are more than 45 spots, we will give some games to officials rated 16-20. The school assigner also has the right to give small school "pig tail" games to officials rated 16-20 at his discretion.
  • Jim Shaw informed Dan Taylor that we would like to ensure that ALL our refs who want to work rec leagues and tournaments get that opportunity. Even though refs who want to work rec ball are all told to call Dan, we generally use the same core group of refs. Since we have so many rec games available in June and July, Dan will call most of our refs to see if they want to work some of the many rec games.
  • The board approved sending one or two board members to the NASO referee conference in Portland in June. The association will pay the conference fee, plus one night's lodging, mileage, and meals for the member(s) who choose to go.
  • The association cannot afford the cost that would be required for observers to have input to the ratings system. For observers to have input, we would need to have at least four of them and they would need to see each official a minumum of twice each. This is far out of our reach financially. Instead, we will purchase two VHS cameras and ensure that each official who wishes to be videod next season is given a tape of one of their games. We may also pay observers to evaluate officials, but this will be for the benefit of the officials only and not as part of the ratings system.
  • Jim Shaw has issued checks for the two camp scholarships that the association awarded this summer.
  • Jim Shaw and Glenn Dunbar will attend the scholarship assemblies for Lakewood High School and Monroe High School respectively to give out our referee scholarship awards.
  • Much thanks and appreciation to the board members who volunteered their precious time to attend the board meetings this summer. Your contribution to the association has been amazing. This organization could not survive without the volunteer efforts of such selfless individuals.
