Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

July 30, 2003

Minutes from the board meeting held Monday, July 30, 2003: In attendance: Larry Kiger, Ashley Thomas, Gunther Hausmann, Tony Helf, Jason Bradley, Pat Kaminske, Kevin Erickson, and Jim Shaw. Jim Shaw informed the board of our financial standing. We are in better financial shape than we have been in anyone's memory. This is not to say that we have "excess" money but we now have enough in reserve to be able to ensure referees would get paid if something unexpected happened (for instance a rec league being unable to pay their officiating bill). Jim will present the 2003-04 budget at our next board meeting. Any "wish list items" for the 2003-04 budget need to be communicated to Jim by August 10. The annual WIAA/WOA meeting will occur August 16 at the Sea-Tac Marriot. Tim Wheatley will be in attendance along with his wife as Tim is receiving the WOA's Meritorious Service Award. At this time, it is likely that three board members will attend as well. SCBOWBO currently does NOT have a President. Kevin Erickson's term expired on July 1 and none of the other board members stepped forward to be president. Hopefully one of them will have a "change of heart" between now and our next meeting on August 10 or we will remain leaderless. Discussed issues to be addressed at this summer's board meetings include: Instituting an injury policy to address official's who suffer an injury after the season has started. Officials with outstanding pay sheets (set time limit). Forming a ratings committee that will present recommendations for vote at the general meetings in the fall. Board members were asked to read through the Board of Directors section of the SCBOWBO website and find the activities that they would be most interested in performing during this board's tenure. At one of our general meetings last season, a presentation was given to our group by the assignor of school football. In addition to recruiting football officials, he asked for a $100.00 donation by our association to a golf tournament that was going to be organized by one of the football officials for the entertainment of coaches and officials. After some debate, the board of directors decided to not donate $100.00 to the tournament because the board was unaware of any of our officials who were going to participate in the tournament and also because the general membership expects the board to spend their money only on activities that directly benefit SCBOWBO officials. This football assignor, who in the past has always assisted the boy's and girl's basketball official's associations to reserve meeting time at the Elk's Club, apparently took the board's decision personally and apparently is not going to help us get the Elk's Club for our fall meetings.
