Board Meeting for July 21, 2004

July 21, 2004

Board Meeting Minutes: July 21, 2004
  • In attendance: Ashley Thomas, Pat Kaminske, Jason Bradley, Larry Kiger, Troy Moe and Tony Churlin.
  • The board selected Ashley Thomas to be the SCBOWBO president for a second term. Ashley has accepted the position. Tony Churlin made a suggestion that the board also choose a a vice president so that there is a logical succession for the following year's presidency. The board liked the idea and chose voted Tony Churlin as Vice President so Tony will be the SCBOWBO president during the 2005-2006 season.
  • The board decided that Larry Kiger will lead the training and apprentice program this fall. He will be assisted by Pat Kaminske and Tony Churlin.
  • Jason Bradley will be in charge of the player scholarship program this fall.
  • Pat Kaminske will be the secretary and will take notes at all board meetings and general meetings.
  • The board wants to make sure that the entire officiating membership is aware that the entire board participates in discussion and approval of meeting items, not just the president. It is believed that some officials think that the president has more "power" than other board members and that is not the case. The board will try to make that clear at this fall's meetings.
  • The board approved paying Kevin Erickson a small yearly stipend to maintain the SCBOWBO website.
  • The WOA is having it's annual official's meeting on August 14. Preceeding that by one day (Aug 13) will be a meeting where details of implementing 3-person officiating will be explained. Anyone interested in attending either meeting should contact Jim Shaw. Secretary Pat Kaminske will attend and will take detailed notes.
  • The implementation of 3-person officiating for SCBOWBO was briefly discussed, but was tabled. More detail will be available after the WOA lays out their plan at the August 13 meeting.
  • The board rehired Dan Taylor as assigning secretary. The board will invited Dan to a meeting this summer to discuss guidelines and expectations. The board is going to return some duties to the assignor that were transferred from the assignor to the board a couple of years ago out of necessity (attendance etc.).
  • The board is going to come up with some firmer guidelines on pricing and regulations for recreation ball leagues and tournaments. This information will be shared with the assigning secretary and the SCBOWBO financial advisor. Jim Shaw and Dan Taylor will be invited to separate SCBOWBO board meetings to discuss and define job responsibilities.
  • The SCBOWBO general meetings this fall will once again take place at the Everett Elks Club. Meeting dates will be finalized at the next board meeting.
  • The board will check with the financial advisor to make sure that a second video camera has been purchased and then will begin work on organizing a video tape program for next season.
  • There was some discussion on the guidelines for attendance credit for officials. Next season, SCBOWBO officials will get credit for being in attendance if they are working a Snohomish County girls or boys basketball game on the night of a meeting.
  • The assigning secretary will notify all officials who have missed more than one meeting at mid-season. This is an attempt to make sure that all officials are fully aware of the potential for being denied playoff games for failing to fulfill their attendance obligations.
  • The board members would like to hear any input in regards to "tweaking" the current ratings system from all members of SCBOWBO. This can be in the form of a phone call, a letter, a conversation or an e-mail. Kevin Erickson will send out an e-mail to everyone on the SCBOWBO e-mail distribution list requesting input.
  • The budget for the 2004-2005 year will be discussed when financial advisor Jim Shaw attends a summer SCBOWBO board meeting.
  • The board clarified policy in regards to jewelry being worn by officials during games. With the exception of a wedding band, officials are to adhere to the same jewelry restrictions as players.
  • The next board meeting will be held Wednesday, August 18 at Alfy's Pizza on Broadway in North Everett at 6:00 PM.
