Meeting Summary

January 24, 2005

General Meeting Held at 7 PM on
Monday, January 24, 2005 at the Everett Elks Club:
(Apprentice Meeting at 6 PM)

  • President Ashley Thomas called the meeting to order at 7 PM and welcomed all officials.

  • Financial Advisor, Jim Shaw, passed out state passes to the officials in attendance who had paid for them. Jim reminded officials to use the electronic paysheet which is on the SCBOWBO website when sending in their paysheets at the end of the season. They can either be e-mailed or "snail mailed" to Jim. Sending in a paysheet on a scrap of paper or the back of an envelope (as has been done in the past) is not acceptable.

  • Bruce Hoffman introduced Drew Hendel who is the program director for the Special Olympics basketball tournament in our area. Drew thanked our officials for their substantial involvement in the past and requested our involvement again this year. The boys and girls associations of Snohomish County provided 24 volunteer officials last year. This year's tournament is on Feb 12 at Kamiak High School. Food and t-shirts are provided for the officials. It is a very rewarding experience and all officials are encouraged to volunteer. Bruce Hoffman will be assigning the officials and his e-mail ID is bruceahoffman@yahoo.com.

  • Board Member Jason Bradley administered board member elections. The two departing members are Jason Bradley and Pat Kaminske. Congratulations to the two new board members who were elected, Greg Osborne and Jack Palmer.

  • Ashley Thomas reminded our officials that we need to be as professional as possible from the time we arrive at a gymnasium until the time we leave. Appearance is important so we should try to dress in a professional manner. We do understand that due to early games and traffic congestion, many officials have to go directly from work to their games. Officials need to be aware that disparaging comments about other officials do no good and when overheard by fans and/or coaches can do a lot of harm to our association. A reminder that varsity officials must watch at least one quarter in each half of a JV game in order to rate the JV officials.
ADDED NOTE: Officials are encouraged to read the "Officials code of Ethics" as well as the "prerequisites for good officiating" section at the beginning of the NFHS officials manual.

  • Board Member Larry Kiger reminded all officials that our end-of-season pizza party and awards banquet will be held at February 7 at 6 PM at Alfy's Pizza in North Everett. It is welcome to all officials and their families. Pizza and beverages will be provided.

  • Board Member Troy Moe stated that a concerted effort is needed to bring more officials into our group. Our group is getting smaller as we are losing more officials than we gain each year. Troy will be working with Todd Weber from the boys association in recruting efforts over the next year. Troy asked each official to try to recruit one official for next season. Glenn Dunbar asked if we have business cards available to give out to officials. Jim Shaw stated that he does have some association business cards and to see him if any official would like some.

  • Ashley Thomas reminded officials to properly warm-up and take care of their bodies before each game as we head into the final weeks of the season. Do everything possible to avoid injury as we need everyone healthy and ready to go as we wind down.

  • Jason Bradley administered a vote on the ratings system dealing with 2-person games and 3-person games. Our officials voted to stay with our current system and just combine 2-person with 3-person games when rating.

  • Troy Moe took nominations for our associations "player of the year," "coach of the year," and "host school of the year" awards.

  • New board member Jack Palmer won the attendance raffle and will receive a new referee shirt.

  • Dan Taylor reminded everyone that the junior high season will be starting soon and to let him know of your availability to work those games.

  • Larry Kiger announced that the board will be accepting applications for the assignor position through March.

  • Ashley announced that district games will be covered by the 15 highest rated officials.

The next meeting will be our end-of-season pizza party on February 7, 2005.
