Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

January 18, 2003

Meeting Minutes: Monday, January 18, 2003:

  • Gunther accepted nominations for board members next year to be voted on at our next meeting. The four nominees are: Duane Taylor, Dana Reese, Ashley Thomas and Larry Kiger. Glenn Dunbar and Jim Shaw are the two board members who will have fulfilled their terms at the end of this season.
  • Kevin brought a supersized greeting card for Kayla Burt that our officials are signing. He will also bring it to the next meeting and to the season-ending party as well.
  • Bruce Hoffman attended at our meeting and asked for officials to help at the Special Olympics tournament to be held at Kamiak High School on February 8.
  • Kevin informed our officials that the observer program is underway and feedback so far has been positive.
  • Jason talked about the benefits that officials can gain from attending a camp and reminded everyone who wants to attend a camp to turn in a camp scholarship request form to a board member. We will assist at least two worthy officials with some of their expenses.
  • Gunther informed everyone of how we are going through school counselors this year to deliver our scholarship application forms to all senior players. In the past, we have gone through coaches and/or A.D.'s and the applications often did not make it to all the players. This appears to be a much more effective method and we are anticipating more forms being turned in this year.
  • Jim informed everyone that our season-ending party will occur at 2:00 PM at the North Broadway Alfy's on Sunday, February 16. The party will count as a meeting and will take the place of the meeting that we had previously scheduled for Monday, Feb 17.
  • Basketball observations:
We discussed a comment made by an offical from another association to former official Tim Wheatley (he is now a coach). The official made an incorrect ruling followed by a poorly chosen comment, "read a rule book coach." We need to address all coaches and players with respect. If they are acting out-of-line, we still need to maintain our professionalism and courtesy.
Keep captain and coaches meetings brief. Do not say, "any questions" as they may ask leading questions that have no answer (like, "how are you going to call over-the back). The scorer's table meeting should be your most extensive meeting.
Guarding: Do not penalize the defense when they have good position. Unless you have an airborne shooter, the defense does not have to be "set." The defense has a right to their position and if the offensive player displaces them, that is not a block.
Reminder to not get "straight-lined" when you are the lead official on a fast-break opportunity. It is MUCH BETTER to get beat and just fall in behind the play than to try to beat the play and end up parallel to the players. Falling in behind gives a great angle on the play.
  • Glenn led discussion on some great game Scenarios.
  • Jim Shaw accepted more nominations for player, coach, and host school award.

BOARD MEETING
  • We finalized criteria (wording) for the new ratings system.
  • The Board approval of final ratings was discussed. Rick Byrum will document and tabulate final ratings. Glenn Dunbar will not be an active referee for the rest of this season (injury) and will double-check Rick's math and clerical work. The Board will not see referee's individual ratings. The board will only get involved if a particular rating seems very "unusual" and will ask Rick and Glenn to check into it. To reiterate, no board member who is an active official will see individual rating sheets.
  • Rick and Jason will notify any district-eligible officials if they are in jeopardy of failing to make their required meeting attendance.
  • There is no padding at each end of the Tulalip gym. Kevin will talk to Todd Stordahl about what we should do.
  • Kevin passed our criteria for post-season SCBOWBO awards and asked for input from the board members.
  • Jason is continuing to "hound" each official to turn in their Scholarship deduction forms.
  • Lakewood and Meadowdale still are not providing shower facilities for referees at girl's games. We will follow-up with Greg Erickson.
  • A referee in our association has been "lobbying for ratings" by telling his partners things like, "we deserve A's on that game" or "we need to protect each other on the ratings." This official will be receiving a letter from the board that this is unethical. Letter will be mailed out this week.

NEXT MEETING: February 3, 2003 at 7:00 PM
