9:35 AM - Wayne Sneva discussed the "Pink
Whistle" program that SCBOA and SCBOWBO officials will participate in from
January 12-24. SCBOWBO purchased 140 pink whistles from the rec ball
fund (thanks to all our officials who generate funds by working rec ball
games!!!!) Pink Whistle Week may be the most important thing we do all
year. We will use them at all HS and Jr High games from Jan 12-24.
Schools have been notified (in theory, assuming they read their e-mails).
Officials should print out the "Whistling Pink" PA announcement from the SCBOA
or SCBOWBO website and take it with them to the games. PA announcers
should read them at the end of the first quarter. This program started at
the NCAA level and is now available to HS officials too. Funds generated
go to breast cancer research. 1 out of 7 women will be affected by breast
cancer in their lifetime. 1 out of 6 men will get affected by prostate
cancer. There are many reasons that we officiate... but one reason
that we all have is that we care.... we care about basketball, we care about
student-athletes, we care about people and we care about future generations.
Funds donated by SCBOA and SCBOWBO officials will get distributed to four
groups: The Key Yow Cancer Fund. The Jimmie V Foundation. The
Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fund. The Fred Hutchison Cancer Research
Institute. Officials were given a form that they could turn in for
the amount they would like to contribute.
9:55 AM - Mark Myers reminded
everyone that the SCBOA banquet is set for March 28.
10:00 AM - Bruce Hoffman promoted the
Special Olympics event that SCBOA and SCBOWBO officials have volunteered for
each year. Last year, 27 of our officials volunteered. It will be
held on Sunday, Feb 8 at Stanwood HS. Please contact Bruce Hoffman to
volunteer.
10:03 AM - Kevin Erickson announced that longtime
official and mentor, Kenny Waite passed away from cancer and his funeral
service will be held in Aberdeen on Sunday, Jan 12.
Steve Landro mentioned that former SCBOA official LeRoy Clement is in
critical health and asked for thoughts and prayers.
10:07 AM - Jeff Kent led a floor demonstration on
positioning. Jeff is a D-1 official who is also in the NBA
Developmental League. He showed several floor situations from L, T
and C and showed how positioning is so critical to call accuracy.
He also encouraged us to think about competitive matchups and open looks
rather than lines on the floor.
10:37 AM - Nominations for boys and
girls board members were held. For SCBOA, Steve Wirth and Phillip
James are running for the board position. Steve Landro is running
unopposed for Vice President. For SCBOWBO, Allan Hall and Mike
Cashman are running for the two board positions.
10:45 AM - SCBOWBO discussed
constitutional changes. They will be voted on at the next meeting.
SCBOA discussed game scenarios.
11:00 AM - Meeting adjourned.
