Meeting Summary
|
|
General Meeting Held at 7 PM on Monday, January 10, 2005:
(Apprentice Meeting at 6 PM)
-
Ashley Thomas welcomed everyone and began the meeting.
-
Jim Shaw handed out 1099 forms and rec ball paychecks. A reminder that rec
ball is payed monthly. Each month, Dan Taylor (assignor) gives Jim a list of
all rec ball games worked and Jim will get paychecks out for by the 10th.
-
Jim Shaw reminded everyone to keep their paysheets up to date and to write down
their game info after each game. The games that are listed on the website are
generally correct, however there are often changes made (to partners etc.) so
using the website to reconstruct ones pay sheet is NOT a good idea. At the
end of the season, Jim processes pay sheets in the order that they arrive.
However, any pay sheets that have errors (incorrect partners etc.) go to the
BOTTOM of the pile and will be processed last. April 15 is now the new deadline
for officials to turn in their high school paysheets and not get a 10% fine for
being late.
-
Jim took down names of those officials who would like to purchase a $10.00
state pass which gets the official into all WIAA state tournament events.
-
Kevin Erickson discussed the incorrect interpretation which was given to our
group at the interpreter's meeting back in November. Endline-run-privileges
for the throwing team are NO LONGER IN EFFECT if a foul or violation by the
defense occurs AFTER the throw-in ends (a throw-in ends when the ball is touched
legally inbounds by the defense or offense). If a foul or violation by the
defense occurs before the throw-in ends and the ensuing throw-in takes place
on the endline again, endline-run-priviliges are retained.
-
Kevin also explained a recent e-mail from the WOA in regards to "no long switches"
in 3-person. The "V-back" process will now occur regardless of whether the
"old lead, new trail" is tableside or opposite of tableside. When the lead official
makes a foul call on the offense (and free throws will NOT be shot), the official
will clear the players, report the foul, and then return to the baseline to
adminster the inbounds play.
-
Troy Moe reminded veteran officials to refrain from giving JV officials a huge
list of things to work on when they give them feedback at halftime of games.
A couple of things to work on is PLENTY. Veterans were also reminded to point
out to be positive and also tell the JV officials the good things they are doing.
Ashley Thomas reminded varsity officials that they cannot rate JV officials unless
they observe AT LEAST two quarters of the JV game. Also, they need to watch that
game and not just be in the stands doing other things.
-
Troy Moe recognized the apprentice officials and thanked them for joining our
group (Cheline, Katie, Dave, Maury, George).
He also recognized Larry Kiger, Tony Churlin and Pat Kaminske for
leading the apprentice program. Troy also encouraged our members to recruit new
officials. Gaining 5 new officials per year while we lose 10 from the previous
year is NOT working.
-
Jason Bradley announced that the board has come up with rating guidelines for
2-person and 3-person games. The guidelines were that officials would turn in
separate ratings for a partner if they worked with that partner in both 2-person
and 3-person games. The official being rated would then end up with two separate
ratings (a 3-person rating and a 2-person rating) and that official would receive
the highest of those two scores for his/her rating. The guidelines were met with
spirited discussion. Members requested that the board give more time
for member input before finalizing a decision. Members also raised the question
of whether or not a change in ratings guidelines would require a vote from
general membership since ratings guidelines are specifically addressed in the
SCBOWBO constitution. The board tabled the subject and bring more info to the
next meeting.
-
Pat Kaminske reminded the group that adjusted ratings criteria will be used in
this year's ratings system after having been approved by the general membership
at a prior meeting. The new criteria are reflected on the website and he also
had printed hand-outs available for anyone who wanted them.
-
Game situations were discussed including a recent game at Everett HS where a lack
of communication between officials at a 3-person game caused some grief at the
end of a game. A reminder that there needs to be TWICE as much communication
between partners for 3-person as 2-person. Make eye contact WITH both partners
before making a ball live.
-
A general member asked if the district playoff list of officials is going to
be expanded because of the additional district playoff spots which will occur
because of 3-person officiating. Currently, district games are given to the
top 15 officials. The board will discuss expanding the district list.
-
Officials who would like to be video-taped during a game should contact Dan
Taylor or Troy Moe. Being video-taped is an excellent too for an official
to improve their court appearance and mechanics.
-
Ashley Thomas received his plaque for working the 2A girls state tournament
at the end of last season.
-
Nominations for board members were held. Phillip James and Kevin Stride were
nominated.
-
Dan Taylor discussed rec ball opportunities. If you would like to work rec ball,
please contact Dan. If you do not receive any game assignments after a meeting,
please contact Dan and he will find games for you. CALL YOUR PARTNERS!
For game day emergencies, it is OK to call Dan on his cell phone. If you leave
a message on Dan's home phone and don't get a call back within a couple hours,
it is also OK to call him on his cell phone.
-
Terry Olson won a free referee jersey in the attendance raffle.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 24, 2005.
