Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

January 5, 2004

Meeting Minutes: Monday, January 5, 2004:

  • Ashley led some interesting game scenarios and question/answer.
  • Ashley reminded everyone that once you leave your house for a game, you will get paid for that game.
Exception 1: The mistake is your fault (I.E. you read your schedule incorrectly).
Exception 2: You did not make contact with your partner.

** Please notify Dan and the A.D. as soon as you realize there is a problem (it could be something as simple as being at the wrong school).

  • Gunther accepted nominations for board members next year to be voted on at our next meeting:
John Johnson, Troy Moe, Duane Taylor, Chuck Moore, Tony Churlin and Dana Reese.
  • Dan discussed assignments and also told everyone that he would call all officials if any games get cancelled due to our expected snowfall.
  • Jason Bradley took nominations for our "player of year," "coach of the year," and "host school of the year" awards. He also started a list of "referee referrals" for this year. Existing referees who recruit new referees that last at least one entire season are rewarded with official's merchandise.
  • Phillip James announced that the Monroe Boys and Girls Club has requested that we put on another volunteer ref clinic for their youth basketball officials. Anyone interested and available on Thursday night, please see Phillip.
  • Kevin talked about the benefits that officials (young or experienced and everyone in between) can gain from attending a camp and reminded everyone who wants to attend a camp to turn in a camp scholarship request form to a board member.
  • Kevin discussed bench decorum and reminded that we need to keep coaches in thier coaching box area. This can usually be done without having it escalate into a problem.
Opposing coach sees an advantage given to "wanderer."
What can you do to get wanderer in line?
Where is your line drawn for a T?
  • Kevin also discussed that we need to do a better job of getting teams out of time-out huddles by the second horn. The time to take care of this is at the beginning of the game rather than waiting til' the end of the game when it could become a huge mess.

  • Gunther: Troy Moe won the attendance raffle and gets a free ref shirt. Congrats Troy!
  • Reminder that our next meeting is on a Saturday: Saturday, Jan 17 at 10:00 AM at the Everett Elks Club.

BOARD MEETING
  • Clarified that our assignor should try to avoid officiating a varsity game on a light night when there are many other referees available? Otherwise it can be perceived as a conflict of interest.
  • Briefly discussed that many officials are not completing and turning in their NFHS test. This hurts our association starting next year when state tournament allotments are based on CERTIFIED officials rather than REGISTERED officials. We need to put more bite into not doing your test such as not assinging ANY more games and not allowing that official to be rated. This would need to be voted on. More at next board meeting.
  • The board has set policy on how much money we shall spend when contributing to an official or official's spouse for special circumstances - for instance when an official's spouse passes away or when a former official passes away.
    Former official: $50.00 Official's Spouse: $25.00
  • Gunther will do check into the hosting problems at Meadowdale HS, Lake Stevens HS and Lakewood HS.
  • Gunther has sent scholarship application forms to counselors at all of our host schools.

NEXT MEETING: January 17, 2004 at 10:00 AM
