Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

February 3, 2003

Meeting Minutes: Monday, February 3, 2003:

  • Board member elections were held. Departing members are Glenn Dunbar and Jim Shaw. Incoming members are Larry Kiger and Ashley Thomas.
  • Phil McDonald informed the group of a golf tournament for all referee associations and coaches that will take place this summer. Phil assigns football games for the schools and encouraged basketball officials to consider working football as well in the fall.
  • Jim Shaw informed everyone that pay sheets and rating sheets are due by March 15. Any sheets received after that date will be subject to fine(s) per the constitution. Pay sheets are to be sent to Jim Shaw and ratings sheets go to Rick Byrum. Ratings sheets will not be seen by an active officials. Rick Byrum will tabulate the ratings and his "math" will be double checked by someone who is not an active official.
  • Kevin Erickson gave a presentation on professionalism. Officials should be held to a higher standard than coaches because we do not have an emotional interest in which team wins the game. When dealing with upset coaches, assistant coaches and players, we need to maintain our composure at all times and deal with them in a rational manner, even when they are not being rational.
  • Jim announced that our final meeting has been moved to February 16 at 2 PM at the Alfy's Pizza restaurant in North Everett. This is our season-ending party.
  • Glenn Dunbar gave a recap of things he's seen when serving as one of our observers. In general, we are doing a great job. Things to work in include better pre-game conferences, sharper mechanics, and communication to the scorer's table.
  • Ron Bradley gave a presentation on proper shot clock procedures.
  • Jim Shaw led the elections for player of the year, coach of the year, and host school of the year.
Player of the year: Christina Palmer, Stanwood High School
Coach of the year: Rick Lee, Mariner High School
Host School of the year: Darrington High School
  • Two therapists from Summit Rehabilitation in Snohomish were special guests at our meeting. They gave information on proper warm-up and stretching and also demonstrated a technique to reduce scar tissue which forms after an injury.

BOARD MEETING
  • The board selected our choices for the Dick Rodland Award, the most improved official, apprentice of the year, table crew of the year, player of the year, coach of the year, and host school of the year. Rick Byrum chose his assignor's award recipient.
  • Glenn Dunbar and Jim Shaw will receive gift certificates to a restaurant as a small token of appreciation for their years of service on the SCBOWBO board of directors.
  • Then year-end party was discussed and we will have several raffle items to give away in addition to our awards.
  • Jim Shaw and Rick Byrum estimated that we officiated almost 2,000 games in the last year.
  • State Tournament officials selected the tournaments they will officiate at.
