Meeting Minutes: Saturday, December 6, 2008:
Everett Community College Gymnasium
1815-13th Street
Everett, WA 98201
8:15 AM to 8:55 AM: Gregg Bartley, Todd Weber and Kevin Stride,
(along with several veterans) led the apprentice meeting.
9:10 AM -
Kevin Stride called the meeting to order. He then introduced guest speaker
Scott Fetterly. Scott is a PNBOA (Seattle) official who has officiated
many years of HS basketball (including several state tournaments) and has
college basketball officiating experience as well.
9:12 AM - Guest Speaker, Scott Fetterly
Scott talked about preparing to officiate a game which starts when you walk in
the gym and people are already making judgments about you based upon your
appearance. Be and look professional. Control what you can control.
Pregame topics should include rivalries and team styles.
Bring as much info to the pregame as you know. Do a pregame conference,
even if you have worked many, many times with a particular partner. All
teams deserve your A game. Whatever game you are assigned to should be
thought of as the "game of the night."
As a young official, take the small steps to get better
instead of thinking you want to go directly to the top. Officials who try
to hurry too fast often struggle when they get there. He stressed
that officials working a JV game need to stick around and watching the varsity
game. They should also attend district and state tournament games.
You can get better by watching other good officials.
Improve every off-season. Attend camps every year
(either attend or observe). Find a mentor. Use your mentor.
Your mentor should be someone who is where you want to be. Scott's
motivations and longevity can be attributed to taking the game seriously,
preparing for every game, taking care of his body, loving the game and having a
fear of failure.
The ideal pregame includes all assigned officials with lots
of time together before the game. That doesn't always work out due
to traffic, working subvarsity games etc. The R should not be a dictator
in the pregame conference. All officials should contribute. Talk
about things we can do that will keep us out of trouble. Communicate how
to show when officials are receiving or giving up plays. Discuss the pass
and crash play. Talk about the center having the confidence to call plays
that he/she has open looks on in transition. All non-basketball-plays need
to be called by someone! Never have 2 opponents unwatched. Watch
both teams as they go to their huddles during a time-out. Talk about
preventative officiating and dead ball officiating. Discuss BI and GT if
the teams are athletic. Go over last-second shot procedures. Tell
your partners the one thing you are working on for the night.
During a game, be willing to be open and honest so that the
crew can make adjustments as needed. Get together at time-outs when
necessary.... especially towards the end of a closely contested game.
9:40 AM - John McInnis (Gym Management, Game Management, Game Awareness)
John mentioned that he keeps a game log where he keeps record of situations that
happen in each game.
GYM MANAGEMENT: Find the game management person when
you arrive at the gym. Ask them if they are going to get the officials and
the teams from the locker rooms at the specified times. Find out if they
are going to escort us off the floor. Who handles blood on the floor?
Where will they be during the game? Where will be exit the floor?
Build some rapport with the game manager. Look the facility over.
Look for dangerous situations such as water coolers too close to the floor or
volleyball standards too close. Are the folding chairs too close to the
sidelines? Little things become big things! During
warm-ups, get rid of rubber bands and illegal headbands. Meet with the
captains and get a feel for them. Don't leave messes for other crews to
have to deal with.
GAME MANAGEMENT: If the JV officials are catching too
much heat from a JV coach, varsity officials can have a quick word with the JV
coach at halftime. It has worked many times. Officials on the varsity game
should be careful to not overload officials on the JV game with too much
information. We need to deal with footstomper coaches and jackrabbits and
non-stop complainers. If the assistant coaches are complaining, deal with
it through the head coach.
GAME AWARENESS: Be aware if a partner has had several
calls in a row or if a partner hasn't had any calls. Pick up on things
like a coaches signal that means for the team to go into a full-court press.
Recognize the offensive sets enough to know where the screens will be.
Know if the defense is in a zone or man-to-man. They are zone if the guard
cuts through the key and the defender does not follow them. If
you have an out-of-control parent in the stands, find the game manager and have
them deal with it. Ask the gym manager who the student section supervisor
is. Parents want to see a good game where the officials are in control.
ALWAYS BE PROFESSIONAL.
10:25 AM - Elections nominations for SCBOA and SCBOWBO.
Mike Cashman was nominated for SCBOWBO board member and Steve Wirth was
nominated for SCBOA board member. More nominations will be accepted at the
next meeting.
