Meeting Minutes for SCBOWBO

December 5, 2009

Meeting Minutes: Saturday, December 5, 2009:
Marysville Boys and Girls Club
1010 Beach Avenue       Marysville, WA 98270

• Opening by Mike Cashman- Mike pointed out that Jeff Schireman would be the first SCBOA official that has worked a state championship game in two different sports when he works the 2009 4A State Football Championship tonight.

• Michelle Duncan gave a presentation about the "Seasons of Officiating." She had some great ideas of things to do all year long to become a better referee.

Fall-
- Review notes from camp.
- Set goals for the upcoming season. Make sure these are realistic goals that you can accomplish during the upcoming season.
- Update your pre-game.
- Read your rule book. Make sure you know the new rules.

Thanksgiving-
- Focus on the points of emphasis for the new season.
- Work on clock management in your early season games. Try and sneak a peek at the game and shot clock whenever you can to avoid being surprised.

Winter-
- Team benches- Know what is happening on the bench.
- Score table- How well do you interact with the people at the table?
- Team fouls- Know where you are on the team fouls. Communicate with the crew when you are going to be in the bonus so you can identify who the shooter is going to be. Understand why the foul count is the way it is.

Close to Christmas-
- Player match-ups- When you go to a game, know which players to watch and which player is going to be your troublemaker during the game.
- Player fouls- Be aware of how many fouls a player has. Don’t save a player with 4 fouls from fouling out, but make sure they deserve the 5th one.

New Year-
- Game information- Before going to a game, do your homework. Where are the teams ranked? What does this game mean as far as playoff implications? Know how the teams play and how the coaches coach.
- Game flow- Understand the flow of the game and the flow with your partners. Be aware of how many fouls each person has called and make sure everyone is consistent.

Martin Luther King Day-
- Communication- Make sure your body language, words, and signals are strong. Be able to sell a call when you have to. Work on communication between center and trail.
- Partners- Success is determined by how well you work with your partners.

Spring-
- Post season. Enjoy your accomplishments.

Summer-
- Have some kind of off season exercise program. Stay in shape so you are ready for the next season.
- Summer camps- go to a camp to improve your skills
- Work summer games with a purpose. Work on something during summer league games that you might use next season. Timing, foul counts, team offenses, and positioning are all good things to work on in the summer.

• From the assignors- There are more turn backs this year than there should be especially since the season is only a week old. Both assignors stress that you do you availability correctly! Call or email your partners and make sure you get a response from them. If you don’t contact your partner and end up doing a game by yourself, you will not be paid double. Also, there are fewer double games this year because we have more new officials and because of more schools going to 5:40 freshman games.

• Game Situations/ Gym Problems-
- Court 2 at Jackson has no shot clock and sometimes the game clock doesn’t work.
- One of the scoreboards at Snohomish High School doesn’t work. That means there is only one game clock, but both shot clocks work.
- There is no coaches box marked at Kamiak High School. A simple solution would be to have them put tape down before the game.
- On a double foul in boys games we have to be aware of the shot clock. After a double foul we resume play at the point of interruption. That means the shot clock would stay at whatever it was at when the double foul occurred.

Meeting adjourned at 9:50 am.
