Meeting Minutes: Monday, December 1, 2003:
-
Ashley discussed his role as "liason" to the schools and asked officials to let him know if any schools are not being properly accomodating to officials.
-
Larry Kiger announced that we will take the NFHS test as a group at our next meeting. Officials need to bring their COMPLETED test to the meeting.
Larry reported that we are consistently getting 13 apprentices to each apprentice meeting. That is excellent attendance.
-
Dana Reese received his 10-year service pin. Congratulations Dana! Here's to at least 10 more good years of officiating.
-
Gregg Bartley, Tony Helf, Ron Bradley and Kevin Erickson gave positive reports about their experiences at officials camp during the summer. Kevin encouraged any interested officials to apply for scholarships to next summer's officials camps. Camp scholarship forms are on the SCBOWBO website.
-
Guest Speaker: Joann Sanchez, Division 1 referee (including Pac-10) gave a great presentation on some of the keys to her success. She cited referee camps and a good mentor as some keys to her rise to D-1. Much thanks to Joann for giving us some of her time and knowledge!
-
Pat Kaminske conducted two votes:
Balloting for all three of the changes proposed by the ratings committee as well as the new injury policy passed.
Switching from an alphabetic to a numerical system passed by a margin of 54-2.
Requiring comments for any ratings of 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 passed by a margin of 49-7.
Allowing J.V. officials to rate the varsity officials (provided that they are certified officials and observe at least one quarter in each half as specified in the constitution) passed by a margin of 31-26.
The injury policy passed by a margin of 55-1.
-
Pat demonstrated the new time-out procedure. Since officials will be standing so far away from each other under the new policy, communication between the two before taking their spots is more vital than ever.
-
Kevin passed around a roster for everyone to check it's accuracy (this in on the website now). Kevin will post the current assigning period site schedules on our website. Todd Stordahl, WOA commissioner, informed us that the Allen Iverson "finger socks" are legal apparel.
-
Gunther gave a demonstration on how to do a pre-game conference which was useful to veterans as well as our new officials.
-
Gunther conducted the attendance raffle. Congrats to Andy Zamudo who won a free referee shirt.
-
Dan Taylor discussed rec and school assigning and handed out assignments.
BOARD MEETING AFTERWARDS
-
The number of rated games required to be a rated official is ten and always has been a policy. This is also in the WOA constitution. Our constitution has been updated to reflect this.
-
Gunther and Jason reported back on the WOA meeting which took place on November 20.
-
The board approved an expenditure of up to $700.00 to replace Jim Shaw's financial advisor computer which has died a sad death.
-
Dan Taylor's cell phone allowance will be increased by $300.00 for the season to reflect his increased call volume in taking over as school assignor in addition to his duties as recreation ball assignor.
-
The board discussed candidates for the WOA meritorious award and will send in a nomination for one of our deserving officials.
