Meeting Minutes for WOA Conference in Yakima, WA

August 9, 2008

WOA Conference Meeting Minutes: Sat, Aug 9, 2008:

In attendance:   Kevin Stride, Dan Taylor, Kevin Erickson

WOA Conference notes:

Basketball Sr. Seminar
Modeled after the football senior seminar
Officials must have taken the Senior Seminar within the past 5 years to officiate in the State Tournament
Cost will be approximately $30 to attend
4 locations (Seattle, Olympia, Spokane, Yakima)
Content will include Points of Emphasis at the state tourney, expectation of officiating at the state tournaments, how to bring focus back when an official loses their focus, how to provide and receive feedback, leadership, professionalism, communication, Integrity, and the responsibilities of the alternate official.

State Tournament Topic:
Much discussion regarding the evaluation process at State.  Main concern was that evaluators and officials all receive the same message.  Officials requested that game tapes be made available to officials after their state tourney games.  Also asked if the officials working the tournament might have some input on evaluations of the other state tournament officials.

Panel Discussion:
Illinois:  Has an officiating licensing program much similar to WA being Certified (goes a bit further with training aspect)

WA Sportsmanship Conduct: Officials need to provide more detailed and specific ejection reports.  Example: Player 12 for team a got ejected for using foul language per rule...
Instead:  "Player 12 for team A said Are you F@$%ing Serious."  The more detail the better, makes it much easier for the WOA to defend us when we provide clear and specific details.

Note in IL - there is no appealing an ejection. This was voted on by the principals of the Illinois schools.  Washington State is the only state that allows appeals of any sort.
The biggest thing that gets officials into trouble regarding ejections is having "ejection remorse" after the fact  (saying things such as "I don't want the player to miss a game...)  " If it was warranted during the game, it is still warranted after the game.

Recruiting:  Schools seems  to be willing to help but do not know their role in recruiting officials.

Grass roots efforts are the most effective way IE recruit a friend program.

Mike N. from WSI produced a 30 second TV commerical for recruiting purposes.  It is available through the WOA office for any association that would like to work with local stations to get it aired.
